Letting The Fingers Do The Talking

Hey axe fans it's Ten Benson - back amongst the mean streets of Camden again last night to lay on some serious slabs of weighty riffage with the hookiest hooks since Bon and Angus first laid it on the line about Rosie.

Benson come on heavy from the word go - a cartoon 5 piece clad in matching string vests and trucker-style baseball caps working their way through a mix of classic cuts from 2000's Hiss (which apparently found favour with Eric Clapton...) interspersed with selections from last year's brilliantly entitled Satan Kidney Pie.

High points of the night was a hard and fast version of I don't need it which allowed plenty of opportunity for some synchronised axe wielding and the poignant social commentary that is Nobody's Wife:
I might not be very tall
I might not be good at football
But at least I'm nobody's wife
    No

I might be a weedy little shit
I might not be super fit
I might not have a pot
    in which to piss
But at least I'm nobody's wife

I might be a figure of fun
I might not be well hung
I might be on the bottom rung
But at least I'm nobody's wife

Eat your heart out Sting...

Support was provided by International JetSet, who my fellow attendee Angel Apostle noted sounded more like they were travelling economy. Still, what they lacked in musical invention they amply made up in snazzy visuals - plenty of stirring footage of various European cities awash with summer of love era riots. Maybe the medium is the message after all...

Chill Out & Fade Away

Chill Out / Ambient has been around since Eno invented the idea some quarter of a century ago.

This apostle is old enough to remember when The Orb sounded close to revolutionary. He's almost old enough to remember when Jean Michel Jarre sounded new.

But it's now time to re-boot the crusade against the music this phrase has come to represent.

In essence all we get these days is glorified lift muzak and it's damned everywhere. Today whilst trying to have a quiet lunch I was subjected to a series of tracks/pieces of music that gave me the impression that the producer had set their 303 to an endless snare repeat phrase.

Then ... decided to go out and made a cup of tea, on returning to the studio all he / she could be bothered to do was add a swooshy noise and some cicadas and then obviously decided that was more than enough music-making for one day and left again to make another cup of tea.

It has to be said... this gumph is appalling, pointless, mindless and downright offensive. Anything is better than having to listen to this... my cafe is down by the beach - so why can't I listen to the ocean, or children playing on the beach? Even the buses have more melody than the crap I had to suffer today.

This apostle suggests that any time you hear Chill Muzak start complaining, make whoever is playing it turn it off or tell them at least to buy Cafe del Mar Vol 1 and put it on repeat. At least there are a couple of tunes on the 1st vol.

Australia's Favourite Songs of 2002

The results of the 2002 Hottest 100 have been announced according to the listeners of Triple J.

Here's the top 10

1. queens of the stone age - no one knows
2. grinspoon - chemical heart
3. the waifs - london still
4. 1200 techniques - karma
5. the vines - get free
6. machine gun fellatio - rollercoaster
7. eminem - lose yourself
8. machine gun fellatio - pussytown
9. red hot chili peppers - by the way
10. silverchair - the greatest view

Good to see 7 Aus acts in the top 10. I don't think Radio One in the UK would have quite such a rockist list.

Other listings include

At no.26 Salmon Hater with 6.66 1/100th the Number of the Beast, at no.54 The Androids Do it With Madonna and at no.85 for those with long memories Chemical Brothers Star Guitar .

This apostle was most upset that no tracks by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs made it onto the chart.

You'll Need To Work It A Little Harder

This apostle loves a band with youth and arrogance as long as they can back it up.

Sadly The Music who have both former attributes are severely lacking in the element that they name themselves after.

The band came on at Sydney's Metro theatre last Friday to much excitement ... and the first two songs played up to all the expectations.

A bit of Led Zep, some Stone Roses and a singer who looked like the rave generation's answer to Freddie Mercury. Plenty of wah wah and Verve like psychedelia.

Song three and it appears the band has run out of ideas and for most of the rest of their set this remains the case. A tenth rate Smashing Pumpkins began to emege from the dirge and at times it felt like watching one of those bands from the schoolyard, all your mates think its great but the rest of the world winces. If Jack Osbourne forms a band this is what it would probably sound like.

I wanted to like the Music , great videos and a couple of good singles. My guess is that they'll get bigger and end up sounding like the Cult . Could be worse, but then again it could have been a lot better.

The only person who kept it coherent was a young and very fresh faced bassist... Whilst he's touring Australia on the Big Day Out I suggest he find another band to work with...

Pull Up To The Bunker Baby

This month's copy of the ever-eclectic and informative The Wire magazine has pointed us in the direction of The Bunker - a cornucopia of rare and unseen punk/post-punk/industrial video clips available for download. Amongst the gems we have been feasting on are a rarely-seen promo for Resistance by Clock DVA (1983), The Clash performing Hate & War on the Alright Now TV Show (1979), SPK doing The Agony Of The Plasma at Sydney's Brickworks (1982) and the Durutti Column performing Sketch For Dawn on Belgian TV (1981). There is also the opportunity to vote for who you would like to see available next so head on over and join our lobby for some Gang of Four footage.

Strike it rich (not)

Those of our readers based in the United States (or its Territories and Possessions) and who purchased compact discs, cassettes and vinyl albums between January 1, 1995 and December 22, 2000 - and who haven't already done so - have until March 3rd this year to stake their claim to part of the $67,375,000 that a cabal of major labels and retail outfits have been forced to stump up having been found guilty of price fixing. The money is to be shared between all the claimants regardless of the number of music products they purchased. Don't get too excited though as the maximum payout will be $20 a person, and if the number applying means that it works out at less than $5 apiece then the money all goes to charity instead. So all in all it ain't gonna change anyone's life but it is nice to see someone trying to stand up to big label greed and getting somewhere.

Oh yeah - you can also opt out of the settlement if you want thus leaving you free to carry on with your own private claim. Details for both options are here.

Master Class

Last night this apostle was priviliged to see the great Kraftwerk in concert.

Everything and more than could be expected from the German giants of musical minimalism.

This hits and all set showed us two things: firstly that Kraftwerk have Soul - a bizarre concept but true. Actually they have more soul in one semi-robotic finger than 95% of today's so-called electronic bands.

Secondly, only live do you realise that every track made by these men has been sampled, stolen and appropriated by every electronic and hip hop act since 1980. It shouldn't be the record companies moaning about copyright constantly but these guys.

Highlights... well every piece of music was a meisterwerk but Man Machine, Radioactivity & We Are the Robots were truly stunning... don't forget, Trans Europe Express, Autobahn, Pocket Calculator, The Model and then the set finale Music Non Stop...phew.

Don't forget to check the site - and make your own track with the Pocket Calculator

Marquee moan

News has emerged that the recently re-opened Marquee club is up for sale and will probably close in March after backers ex-Eurythmic Dave Stewart and entrepreneur Mark Fuller decided that it is losing them too much money. The club only opened again last September following a seven year hiatus when its last incarnation in Charing Cross Road got turned into a rubbish pub. Here at the Apostles we are not exactly surprised by the news given the paucity of bands (not to mention bands worth seeing) actually playing there over the last 5 months...

Anyone wanting to show messers Stewart and Fuller how to run a venue properly should contact the administrator, Tony Negate, who reckons that "the Marquee is an attractive business that can be significantly built upon by an entrepreneur who is serious about making an impact on London's music scene".

New York (W)rapping

Envy may be a sin but those Apostles who do not live in New York are a little green that their neighbourhood isn't going to be touched by the magic hands of artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who have finally won permission to weave a fluttering orange sculpture around 23 miles (37 km) of New York's Central Park. The exhibit, entitled The Gates, will be erected in February 2005 and stand for two weeks, costing the artists $3m (£1.8m).

West Country Blues

Now I know why they were playing the likes of Lightning Hopkins before the appearance of the main act.

This apostle had the pleasure of seeing Polly Jean Harvey for the first time last night.

Pure and tight modern blues, Jon Spencer eat your heart out... this woman is the master class.

Don't know why but I felt the ghost of Gene Vincent on the stage with this band

Bar Rule Blues

Kim Howells (UK Minister for Culture) must be a busy man. When not giving forth on the evils of rap music, or slagging off video games and modern art (not to mention having a go at folk singers) he is - it seems - busy trying to put an end to the so called 'two in a bar rule' - which allows small-scale gigs in bars, pubs and restaurants to go ahead without the licensing authorities getting involved.

If Howells has his way every venue putting on live music on any scale would have to be licensed - the added cost of which would make it unrealistic for most to continue. The Musicians Union have all the info on it here and you can sign the on-line petition here to try and persuade him to change his mind.

Rock is the New Rock

It's happened. Remember when the Strokes came to our notice it wasn't long before there were lots of mini Strokes.

Now the Datsuns have engendered the first of many. Out of Melbourne's pubs come Jet who have just released their ltd edition 12" Dirty Sweet EP. There are only a thousand out there so you'd better be quick if you want to hear this month's future of rock. Rough Trade in London are excited and so are a few others.

The Apostles are pretty happy too... ok they owe a debt like they all do to the Radio Birdmen and AC/DC but at least some of the influences are Aussie and not culled from o'seas.

The EP features 4 tracks, the Rockin' Take it or Leave it, the very un-pc Cold Hard Bitch , The very Stones circa Goats Head Soup and this apostle's favourite Rollover DJ which serves it where its due these days.

The EP's sleeve is almost as good as the music, cut ups with the boys and their flying v guitars wearing Disco Sucks and the Stones Tongue T-shirt. All very late seventies, reminds this apostle of Eddie & The Hot Rods meet Lords of the New Church but with better music.

I hope they sound as good by June

A Green and Pleasant Land

If you'd like to mark the life of Joe Strummer please donate a tree - not to us but to Future Forests.

They're growing a forest in his memory - the Joe Strummer Memorial Forest on the Isle of Skye - to mark the work he did for environmental causes. Strummer aimed to become the world's first "Carbon Neutral" artist and wanted to have his own forest planted to offset carbon dioxide emissions generated from both the production of his CDs and his tours. Respect.

It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Playing Bingo)

How can bingo possibly be cool? Well, there's bingo and there's Bob Dylan bingo - which has to be the best ever use of this traditional game. Your bingo card contains songs instead of numbers in the squares. Each time Bob plays a song on tour that appears on your card, you can mark it off. And if the pleasure of following Bob's set list wasn't enough in itself, there are prizes to be had. The times certainly are a-changing in the world of bingo.

Barcelona Meets Sydney Clubbing Style

This apostle made his way down to Sydney’s hippest new Sunday clubbing experience yesterday.

Sunday Beats held in the heart of the CBD in an exclusive boutique hotel is the only foil to a long and tiring weekend out on the town.

In a city where your Sunday club experience is either a tired old pub full of overwrought drinkers and trannies. Or, even worse, the overpriced franchise of some global club multinational, this venue and its private party concept takes you to a clubbing nirvana only previously imagined by creative advertising managers trying to sell new alcohol concepts.

Arrive by lift onto the eighth floor and straight into the Chill Penthouse with tv room, double bed, spa bath and showers. The Sunday Beats organisers will also sell you a get it together kit if you’ve had a particularly tiring weekend. As we arrived we found one young clubber sleeping off Saturday nights excesses quite peacefully.

On awaking she’d be jumping into the shower and then heading straight upstairs for the main event, finding, an impossibly cool scene outside on the rooftop terrace. The evening breezes beginning to pick up, the sun melting behind Sydney’s late 20th century monuments to modernism and the DJ playing flawless house with a harder edge.

The crowd are very , it. The remains of last night, clued up poms straight off the beach, darlinghurst boys preening and posturing in front of the floor to ceiling windows and plenty of boy and girl booty shaking it on the dancefloor.

Last night guest DJ Jon Sa Trincha rocked the house sending his tunes rumbling down George street and beyond as amazed pedestrians craned their necks to see what was going on.

This apostle says get down there soon, these parties only retain their feel for a while, and a suggestion to any DJ worth their salt, if you can, fly out and play for free this is Ibiza 1989-90 and it won’t last long.

Only one suggestion. Get a DJ on the penthouse balcony to play a full 6-7 hour chill set . No faux or jazzy house just good tunes new and old to relax, rewind and refresh to.

And why do we mention Barcelona, well it’s one of the few times this apostle has not felt the hand of UK clubbing culture on an event and very refreshing it is too.

The apostles are delighted to learn that the spirit of John Lennon lives on in the humble game of tiddlywinks. If you want to acknowledge the former Beatle whilst grappling with coloured plastic discs, you could always perform the John Lennon Memorial shot (a simultaneous boondock and squop). Of course there are times when only a bomb will do – bound to make your opponent scrunge.

Exercise Your Democratic Rights

Triple J , the Aus yoof radio station is now taking votes for its hottest 100. Think Peel's Festive 50 with more Aus stuff and some rather dodgy rock.
That said you'll be suprised by the relative good taste this station has considering it's national. You can pick from their list... I chose one of my favourites of the year, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs Bang. They also let you make your own choice so Go There Now and make your mark.
Here's some of their better suggestions
Add n to X - Take Me To Your Leader
The Vines - Get Free
You Am I & Tex Perkins - Dirty Deeds
Peaches - Set it Off
Datsuns - Motherfucker From Hell
Cog - Bondi
Ladytron - 17

At the Captain’s Table on the Love Boat

This apostle made his way down to the Hahn Bar , last night, at Sydney’s Hyde Park Barracks to catch Louie Austen making his only Sydney festival appearance.

But instead we were treated to an evening of rather insipid jazzy house provided by Mr Austen’s Australian partners in crime, The Sneaky Sound System.

Four boys dressed in tired white tuxedos reminded this apostle of the waiting staff on the Love Boat . The soundtrack they provided wasn’t much better either, I felt as though I’d been sucked into the vortex of a Hart to Hart soundtrack which wasn’t helped by one of the sneaky boys mc’ing some trite jazz commentary over the top of their selection of inoffensive tunes.

After about twenty minutes of this we eventually get the swinging Austrian himself, looking like a cheery / cheesy version of Donald Sinden and belting out a pretty fabbo version of The Lady is A Tramp, then straight into his signature cover , Madonna’s Music.
And then…. before he could get another word in, back to the boys in white and more noodling and wittering.

This apostle hung around for another 20 minutes before we got to hear Louie again, worthwhile the second time but yet again those Sneaky Boys thought we were there to hear them and more of their jiggle jiggle lift music….. Time to leave….

Shame I would have loved to hear Louie do One Night in Rio

Italian Indie Label Looking For Friends

The nice people we are, we just can’t help ourselves when people come to the apostles asking for help. Shado Records sent us an email telling us that they’ll be be at the MIDEM conference and are seeking appointments with distribution companies and partners to find licences, co-productions, under-editions, co-editions, bookings etc to present their Artists and projects .

As they are based in Florence home to many renaissance images of our apostolistic brothers we can’t really deny them our assistance.

Acts on the label include the following. We quite happily admit that we’ve never heard of any of these people but they've all worked really hard on their names which is good enough for us.
VALVOLA (Florence) / ORCHESTRA DU SOLEIL (Munich) / DIE MOULINETTES (Munich) / ELETRONICO (Tokyo) / MONSIEUR MO' RIO (Stuttgart) / ASTRO BLACK STEREO (Florence) I MICROMARS (Oslo) / REMINGTON SUPER 60 (Burevein) / THE MUSIC LOVERS (Italy)
And our favourite THE ELECTRONIC TOMATO (Tokyo/Florence)

S.H.A.D.O. Featured Artists also include MOE TUCKER (Velvet Underground) I MARTIN REV (Suicide) STEREOLAB I GONZALES & PEACHES I THE EXPERIMENTAL POP BAND I THE MAXWELL IMPLOSION

Best Song Title of 2003 - Already !!

Can it be true? It's only the first week of January and this apostle thinks that 2003 already has a winning song title.

Following in the footsteps of the Datsuns and D4 come Brisbane's Aampirellas a hard rockin' outfit consisting of two boys and two girls.

From Russia with love

Zhelezobeton is a new Russian label focusing attention on experimental electronic, acoustic and noise music. Here is what they have to say about themselves: "The main objective is to unveil the potential of Russia as a source of high-grade and unconventional music, that's why we are ready to cooperate with all interested parties: musicians, zines, labels, distributors etc. We also have peculiar point of view to our products appearance. We accept neither non-professional 'self-releases' nor bulk-editions packed in standard jewel-cases. Our design concept is inseparably linked with the music, and limited editions should underscore its peculiar status. Look around yourselves and you'll see great amount of music and its obvious excess. Constantly growing sound flow makes music to be just useless air vibrations. We can't turn these processes back but we can remind you what really is music for a hundred couples of ears."

The first couple of releases on CD-R are by Cloning Experiment Failure ("Very rhythmical, with cracklings of overloaded apparatus, feedbacks and sampled guitars...") and DN23rd ("...very uncommon frequency which combines usual laminated radionoise and signals of unknown origin.") and come for the bargain price of $US 4 each (plus postage). Both are a limited edition and feature hand-crafted packaging.

Chemistry is what they are

There is a good interview - and accompanying mix - with Simian over at French digital culture destination D-I-R-T-Y. The mix features such eclectic artists as Robert Wyatt, Raymond Scott, Supercollider, Fat Truckers, Daft Punk, 808 State and Kenny Rogers. If that doesn't take your fancy then there is a wealth of other mixes ready and waiting for your listening pleasure.

Sounds to love and cherish

A recent correspondent asked whether we at the 12 Apostles could recommend anything that allowed a Real Audio stream to be captured as an MP3. Round here we are fans of Total Recorder (for the PC platform) and Audio Highjack (for Mac OS). For those looking for a way of storing MP3 streams then Streamripper does the job very well.

Whose your turntable daddy?

"Of all my inventions I like the phonograph best" - so said Thomas Edison and we here at the Apostles are kinda inclined to agree with him. Over at the excellent Lost & Found Sound you can hear the story of the man himself : part one, part two
