Media Giant starts "Stretching its legs"
America's biggest radio company Clear Channel - which owns and operates 1,233 radio stations and claims 100 million listeners - has been raising eyebrows in the US by sponsoring pro-war rallies. Clear Channel also happens to be the UK's biggest rock concert promoter so maybe Britain's gig-goers will soon feel their presence.

All Along The Watchtower
In our on-going mission to dig out those more interesting sound files begging for a new musical setting we were pleased to recently come across a treasure trove of Jehovah Witness goodies. Amongst the items available are a announcement from 1967 of the new date for Armageddon (which was due in 1975) and a few timely words on the destruction of Babylon:-Very soon now we wait for Babylon the great to be turned upon and severely scathed and destroyed and decimated to where there is nothing left of her... you see, we told you Babylon the great was going down, was going to be destroyed. You said it would never happen but you did it yourselves. Now you're next. Jehovah will destroy you. |

Music in the Key of EEG
For those amongst our readership who think modern music is just not cerebral enough we recommend a listen to the results (MP3) of the recent Cyborg Echoes DECONcert. The aim of the event was to wire up an audience worth of brains and process the resulting alpha waves into sound and judging by the pictures of the event everyone had a fun (if somewhat static) time. |

Nice White Kids in Terror Ordeal
12 Apostles' favourite Canadian anarcho nontet Godspeed You! Black Emperor were apparently detained by the FBI last weekend on suspicion of being terrorists after stopping off at a Oklahoma petrol station en route to a gig.
According to reports a station attendant phoned The Man after the band pulled in to refuel their two vans and white-panel truck. Before even having a chance to leave the station, the group was surrounded by police cars and FBI agents who had guns drawn. The band was held for questioning for roughly three hours before finally being released as innocents. GSYBE front-man Efrim Menuck appeared sanguine about the whole episode when commenting about it at a subsequent performance:- "I just feel very lucky that we weren't Pakistani or Korean... They detained 1,000 people in California, no one knows what happened to them. We're just lucky we're nice white kids from Canada. That's what I feel lucky about."

Saint Watch
Saints Alive - a US based organisation with a mission to restore and maintain the dignity of the remains of the saints and promote proper veneration, led by the wonderfully named Chevalier Thomas J.Serafin V.V (in case you're interested the V.V apparently stands for The Order of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Vicosa - a dynastic order which recently knighted him) - has put together a list of Patron Saints for special sufferings. Apparently those cursed with disappointing children' should direct their prayers towards St. Louise de Marillac and those who are suffering from 'opposition of church authorities to their hopes and dreams' (which seems like it could cover a multitude of things) should give St. Philippine Duchesne a go... |

Is That Your Flap, Jack?
This particular Apostle thought it was about time we gave another mention to Ivor Cutler. Cutler, the seminal poet, whose work comes under fantastic titles like Pickle Your Knees, Who Tore Your Trousers James?, My Sock and The Purposeful Culinary Implements, was 80 this year.
Aficionados of his unique style will appreciate Befriend a Bacterium – his sticker book of Cutlerisms which you should have on hand to give to your fellow man. Part of us hopes that it remains at no. 26,356 in the Amazon chart as Cutler is close to our hearts and we know he’s not in it for the money or fame, but as Apostles we are destined to spread the word about this great man. Another book to add to his huge collection of great words is out later in the year. Make sure you ask Santa for it.

Musical Encyclopedia
Beck was in town last night playing to the fans, the rest were either over the road in the football ground listening to the Boss or at home watching the war.
We got a somewhat of a greatest hits package with all the hits thrown in, Loser, New Pollution, Golden Age, Where It's At, Nicotine & Gravy, Tropicalia and this apostle's favourite... Devils Haircut .
He played the Bard, The Entertainer, The MC, Funkster and Rock God all in the space of two hours.
Fellow gig goer made a Bowie comparison .... this apostle is persuaded after last night's show that he's one of the few american musical icons around at the moment...

Taking Notice
The first 12 Apostles vinyl outing, I believe in Punishment, is receiving some favourable notices amongst the cognoscenti. The forthcoming edition of UK breaks/drum and bass magazine Knowledge has this to say of it:-
"Scary anti-war record from crazy Germans Foundation, with the Kraftwerk-esque picture of 4 cowboy-boot-clad George Bush-es, goosestepping on the artwork, giving you some clue into the message going on here.
Sort of like New Order remixed by Rennie Pilgrim or Tayo, and more eerie than any d&b I’ve heard recently, this is weird, mental but ultimately infectious barrier-smashing breakbeat." (4/5) - Knowledge

The Bright Lights Stay On
London’s mighty Astoria – the scene of many equally mighty gigs - has been saved from closure. Westminster Council were planning to withdraw the venue's licence following a shooting at a So Solid Crew gig over a year ago. The Apostles thought this Saturday’s highly-anticipated Interpol extravaganza might be their last – but no…… the bright lights stay on.

MTV Europe - Corporate SadFucks
OK first up Thanks to Internal Memos.com and Done Waiting Blog.
Check this email for internal censorship from Mark Sunderland, the Broadcast Standards Manager at MTV Networks Europe and discover how MTV Europe is handling the war.
They'll probably just play George Formby & Gracie Fields from now on ... then again Formby might be a tad radical for them.
This E-mail that was sent out to MTV Europe staff.
Dear all,
In the light of the outbreak of war in Iraq in the last 12 hours, our recommendations for the scheduling and content of videos and programmes are as follows:
1. Video recommendations Obviously, there will be heightened public sensitivity to representations of war, soldiers, bombing, destruction of buildings and public unrest at home. The ITC Programme Code requires us not to broadcast material which offends against good taste or is offensive to public feeling. We therefore recommend that videos featuring the following are not shown at the moment:
war, soldiers, war planes, bombs, missiles, riots and social unrest, executions, other obviously sensitive material
Examples include: System of a Down "Boom!" - anti-war video containing facts and figures about, amongst other things, the projected casualties in the war in Iraq. Aerosmith "Don't want to miss a thing" - contains footage from the film "Armageddon". Manic Street Preachers "So Why So Sad" - contains footage of soldiers being killed and man throwing a hand grenade. Passengers/U2 "Miss Sarajevo" - contains missiles, guns and buildings being blown up. Bon Jovi "This ain't a love song" - contains war scenes and victims in distress. Iggy Pop "Corruption" - contains wars, riots, guns and captions "we love guns" and "we love rifles". Paul Hardcastle "19" - contains war footage. Radiohead "Lucky" - contains war footage including injured children. Billy Idol "Hot in the City" - contains an atomic explosion. Armand van Helden "Koochy" - contains an atomic explosion and ships being blown up. Trick Daddy "Thug Holiday" - contains soldiers being killed at war.
Furthermore, videos with words such as "bomb", "missile", "war" or other sensitive words in the artist or song title should not be shown at the moment.
Examples include: Outkast "B.O.B (Bombs over Baghdad)" - song title may offend. Radiohead "Invasion" - song title may offend. Megadeth "Holy Wars" - song title may offend. Gavin Friday "You, Me and World War Three" - song title may offend. B-52s videos.
Also, please note that some evergreen tapes contain sensitive videos e.g. until recently, the MTV2 evergreen contained the Outkast "B.O.B. (Bombs over Baghdad)". We therefore recommend that music programmers ensure that inappropriate songs are removed from the evergreen tape for the duration the war.
Please note that this is not a definitive list of videos. Please use the ITC video restrictions database to check each song before broadcast. If you are aware of any other videos featuring the above images, titled with the above words or which may be unsuitable for broadcast in the light of the outbreak of war, we recommend that these are pulled from your schedules.
2. Programme recommendations Under the ITC's rules, we have two main obligations regarding programmes:
(a) Not to broadcast material which offends against good taste or is offensive to public feeling. For example, no programme should contain: (i) images of war, bombs, missiles, etc that are likely to be seen as insensitive or offensive at this time (see above for further guidance). (ii) jokes about the war, about bombing Iraqis, about the American, Iraqi or UK troops. (iii) comments about the war that are likely to be seen as insensitive or offensive.
Furthermore, the content of each long-form show should be considered before scheduling. Scripts for presenters and news pieces must also be treated with great sensitivity. (b) To ensure that our programmes treat the issue of war in Iraq with "due accuracy" and "due impartiality". Therefore, we need to ensure that any programme which deals with issue of war in Iraq: (i) deals fairly with each opposing view. It cannot be one-sided. Both sides of the argument need to be dealt with, and dealt with fairly. (ii) does not give the view of MTV or the views of MTV presenters. (iii) does not give facts, or opinions based on facts, that are incorrect e.g. an anti-war argument that states the war is bad because 50 million Iraqis will die (the official estimates are much lower than that), a pro-war argument that states Saddam Hussein should be toppled because he is going to invade Israel (there is no evidence of this). You need to ensure that any facts included in your programmes are accurate, and verified by an official source e.g. an Amnesty International report, a UN report, Reuters news service.
If you are unsure about the suitability of a video or programme, please call the Broadcast Standards Managers: Mark (x6195 (HC)) Dan (x7734 (HC)) or Aurea (x6197 (HC)).

Daylight Robbery
Just when you thought the world couldn't become a scarier place comes news that two 'fans' have paid £160,000 at a charity auction for four tickets to Celine Dion's new show at Ceasar's Palace in Vegas. The show, imaginatively entitled A New Day, comes complete with the usual lofty claims and obligatory tie-in with a major motor manufacturer:- "Our goal with this project is to create a unique spectacle of song, theatre, dance and state-of-the-art technology," said Franco Dragone (the show's 'creator'). "I see Celine as a satellite who captures images. She will use the stage to create her own universe and share it intimately with the audience. A NEW DAY… presented by Chrysler will show Celine’s immense talent in a new art form. We hope to heighten and intensify the senses so that each spectator leaves the show seeing more than they did the day before." Yeah, right, whatever.... |

As always Mr Lydon is ahead of his time -
World Destruction / Afrikaa Bambata & Johnny Lydon
This is a World Destruction Your life ain't nothing The human race is becoming a disgrace Countries are fighting with chemical warfare Not giving a damn about the people who live. Nostradamus predicts the coming of the Anti-Christ Hey! Look out - the third world nations are on the rise. The Democratic-Communist Relationship won't stand in the way of the Islamic force..
Scary huh??

A Little Local Colour
It's good to know that former Factory Records boss Tony Wilson didn't completely take the corporate dollar when he returned to his day job of presenting Granada Reports. Today he proved that colour is still king in Tony's world when he had a Spinal Tap moment over a camera's faulty red light - in the earshot of the rest of North West England. From the heady heights of 24 Hour Party People to the tv damnation of It'll Be Alright On The Night in one fell swoop. Tony, Tony, Tony. |

Sweet Free Music
The Apostles find it amazing that the big recording companies are still denying the route to our musical hearts is through the distribution of free music via the web. They think if they deny it, it'll go away. Words of wisdom from Peter Jamieson, chairman of the British Phonographic Industry: "If we become accustomed to free music today, there will be no music tomorrow." Errrr - does he think that the big guys have a monopoly on this fine art? Does no-one make music apart from him? |

Retail Strategies
The first round of the ongoing battle between Hong Kong based cheapie CD purveyor cd-wow and the UK music industry seems to have gone in favour of the bad guys. cd-wow sells newly released albums at prices well below those charged by UK retailers and offers free delivery worldwide, which has spurred the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) to seek an injunction against Music Trading On-Line (HK) Ltd (the firm behind cd-wow) claiming that their sale in Britain contravenes the UK's Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.
cd-wow had sought to head off the action by claiming that the BPI was not entitled to act as a representative of the whole industry but in the High Court last week Sir Andrew Morritt disagreed and has turned the issue over to the lawyers for both parties to reach a ruling. No doubt his services will be required again if no settlement is reached...
In the meantime if you need any mainstreamish CDs for a reasonable price then you know where to go... |

Knowledge is Power?
Anyone looking to follow in the footsteps of The Apostles and release a record with the odd topical sample involved should look no further than BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House show which has made its collection of Donald Rumsfeld soundbites available online.
Amongst the gems available are some incisive thoughts of the level of US strategic knowledge:- "The message is that there are no knowns, there are things we know that we know, there are known unknowns - that is to say there are things that we now know we don't know, but there are also unknown unknows - there are things we do not know we don't know, and each year we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns" and a conclusive summary about the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden:- "We do know of certain knowledge that he is either in Afghanistan, or in some other country, or dead". |

Chill Out Beats
If you're looking for the ultimate experience in cool, check out Anetstation - Antarctica's commercial-free stereo web radio. Not only do you get today's temperature in the sub-arctic (a blistering minus 58 degrees centigrade at the time of writing) but a selection of eclectic toons. For five years, Anetstation has been broadcasting to the world. In their words, it's "not intended to be popular radio you play every day, but rather radio that you can count on for its unique sense of clarity."
If the beats aren't enough to occupy you, there's always downloads of various maps of Antarctica, the South Pole image of the day, and the South Pole webcam "updated every 10 minutes by a very cold computer." Oh yeah, the image may be dark. After all, it is the South Pole.

Hey Ewe! Watch Out!
Norwegian black metal overlords Mayhem have had assault and battery charges filed against them by fan Per Kristian Hagen after he suffered a fractured skull at one of their recent gigs after being hit on the head by a flying sheep's head. Apparently lead singer Maniac was busy dissecting a dead sheep on stage when an over ambitious knife thrust send the head hurtling towards the unfortunate Mr Hagen... Still then again what else would you expect from a band who used to have a lead singer (now deceased) who enlivened gigs by breathing air from a plastic bag with a putrid raven in it. |

Fame? It's Just an Illusion
Music fans in New Orleans, Philadelphia, Detriot, Memphis, Nashville, Cleveland and New York are no doubt taking cover as the UK exports its musical has-beens to find fame and fortune in the USA.
TV series Reborn in the USA puts a motley selection of faded pop idols back on the road. Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley, double act Dollar and music industry veteran Elkie Brooks, join Gina G, Then Jericho frontman Mark Shaw, Eurovision songstress Sonia, former EastEnders actress Michelle Gayle, Imagination singer Leee John and Haydon Eshun, one-time child star of 90s boy band Ultimate Kaos. Remember them? Of course you do!
Sonia hasn't lasted long, quitting the show in floods of tears when the audience voted her off. According to The Sun an insider said: "It’s bad enough being branded a has-been — but it’s very embarrassing to be the worst of the lot.” Surely there's more than enough competition for that particular accolade.

What's That Buzz
Straight outa Sydney's eastern burbs comes the latest in Rock'n'Roll.
We've already heard that A&R types want to kidnap these guys and whizz The Bumblebeez over to London.
This Apostle hasn't seen them but we've heard the sound and it's new.
Whilst the Coral might plunder some of the nicer parts of the early Beefheart repetoire, these guys go for the jugular and take their template from Trout Mask Replica and then throw in 21st century New York, hip hop and the nasty side of Beck
This ep sounds like where Radiohead should have gone... love 'em already and they've only been in my life since Tuesday.
Great web art as well.

Band Succumbs To Corporate Dollar
Shame on you we say.... this Apostle remembers when the Hoodoo Gurus were a band that (sort of) mattered, back then in the days when pure escapist rock'n'roll was rarely seen. Fantastic first album Stoneage Romeos and great live shows.
Now they've been sucked in by the succubus of the NRL (National Rugby League) and have had their great pop rock track, What's My Scene, transmogrified into the appalling That's My Game.
What are you thinking of Dave & Brad? There are many things you could have allied your music to - and earnt money - but the NRL? One word... Disgusting |

As a support son you suck...... bring on the main band !!
The Apostles were out last night in force at what has been labelled London's 'most fashionable gig of the year (so far)' - the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Astoria. Unspeakably hip the evening may have been, but that wasn't a phrase which applied to the first act. Boy what an 'act' it was. Like Russell Grant on acid, Har Mar Superstar pranced and gyrated to souped-up disco techno, combining his musical antics with an on-stage strip. We admired his balls but unfortunately we nearly got a look at them as he got ever-closer to tearing off his bulging lyra trunks. Mmmm. London's Evening Standard thought he was 'a few guitars short of a full group'. Quite.
The Kills were no frills. They also managed to keep their clothes on. This boy, girl and a drum machine churned out pretty tight toons but singer VV was too fascinated with her own on-stage image to impress. Spending most of the set hanging off her mike stand surrounded in clouds of cigarette smoke it felt like she was practising for a cover shoot rather than living and breathing the music. More unlike Yeah Yeah Yeahs' singer Karen O she could not have been. Like an overpowered Duracell bunny, Karen sung and spun, with a power and charisma which was spellbinding. Unlike VV, she didn't care about posturing but about passion and completely oozed the beats from every last sweaty little pore. Backed by Nick Zinner and Brian Chase, that particular dervish could have whirled all night. Check them out. |

Are you ready to be heartbroken?
Clearly rock stars and golf go together like chalk and, erm, cheese. So we are grateful to the Observer Sport Monthly magazine that brings us an essential survey of rock stars with a passion for eighteen holes. Once I’d recovered from the trauma of the thought of Lloyd Cole in a Pringle sweater I was most taken by Iggy Pop’s listing.
“As one of the rock fraternity's more notorious members, Iggy has been known to take to the stage still wearing his golf spikes, topped off with an aluminium Afro wig and maternity smock. Hardly surprising, then, that his presence hasn't always been welcome at the country clubs. In 1970, the recovering drug addict was chased off the Doral Golf Resort in Miami for calling security and demanding they bring his valium out midway through his round.”

More Anti-Pop
We've found a messageboard for all those who'd like to rail against the likes of Britney, Billie Piper & Christina Aguilera.
Currently there are only 17 registered members on the board... I hope there are more than 17 of you out there who have something to say about manufactured factory pop pap.
I must admit the quality of discussion isn't too philosophical, we give as an example this 21 year old's contribution, In my opinion, Britney Spears is just an immature GIRL that everyone wants to HAVE SEX with. Compare that to Stevie Nicks, who is a mature WOMAN that you want to MAKE LOVE to.
Well there you go.... we didn't say we'd find you the sharpest minds on the www. |
