Midwinter Fun
While Europe goes festival wild in the summer, we Australians refuse to lie down and take it and thanks to Byron Bay we have Splendour In The Grass
Line up is pretty cool as well... Franz Ferdinand, PJ Harvey, Money Mark & MC5 are just a few on the bill |

Remix Culture
The young today...what can you say?
A friend Dj'ing the other night decided to throw on Gene Vincent's, Be-Bop-A-Lula for a change.
Within seconds a young thing was at the decks asking ...Who's done this remix... it's amazing
She was even more amazed to learn that the song was almost 3 times as old as her. |

Sydney's Sound No Sound
We've just received an email from these Sound No Sound dudes who write.
Sound No Sound is a new monthly Sunday afternoon residency of innovative music at the Bat & Ball in Surry Hills.
Our aim is to offer a showcase where the bands that are often clumped into the post rock and experimental genres can play to an appreciative crowd with like-minded musicians.
The first showcase on Sunday 9th May features Husbands ; The Garbage & The Flowers and Castings.
Husbands - Astounding Sydney symphonic guitars outfit, with a staggering nine-piece line-up featuring Oren Ambarchi ; Scott Horscroft ; Brett Thompson ; Brendan Walls and others. Husbands improvised an amazing 30-minute collaboration at this year's Big Day Out with Can legend Damo Suzuki.
The Garbage & The Flowers - Long-serving local dream and drone-pop purveyors, invoking the spirit of the Velvet Underground and transporting it into the 21st Century.
Castings - Experimental 'n' improvised noisescape band from Newcastle, reminiscent of Black Dice, Set Fire To Flames, and Jackie-O-Muthafucker.
Sound No Sound is on at the Bat & Ball (corner South Dowling and Cleveland Streets) in Surry Hills on Sunday 9th May from 5pm til 10pm. Entry is $7.

Kick Out The Wheelchairs MuthaFucka's
Yes it's true.. the MC5 have decided to get down and get out there and are touring Australia in July.
I'm probably some what of a sucker for this stuff but Bondi Apostle will be forking out the huge sums of $'s necessary to experience some of that 1968 /69 revolution.
Anyway.. how could you resist the MC5 in Coogee.... detroit by the sea... I think not!
While we're in Detroit... please please please can we have the re-formed Ig & the Stooges here. We've heard so much about their US & Japanese shows I think we deserve them next. |

Throbbing Gristle One Off Reform Abandoned Until Next Year
After the fabulous new remix album bringing the sounds of Genesis et al to the 21st century masses quite a lot of excitement has been building up to the one off appearance of one of the most individualistic inventors of the sound of this century...
But now there are going to be quite a few upset puppies walking around .. as it is now not going to happen for another year
Here's the message sent out to the faithful this week.
BREAKING NEWS RE:TG EVENT MOVED TO LATER DATE! FOUNDATION / ATP
On behalf of Throbbing Gristle We are very sorry to have to announce that it will NOT be possible to present the RE~TG event as planned on May 14th-16th 2004. Despite good sales for the event (in excess of 1600 tickets), unexpected cost rises and scheduling complications would have required the festival virtually to sell out before enough funds were generated to stage the RE~TG festival in the manner orginally intended by T.G, Paul Smith and Foundation . All ticket holders will be offered a FULL refund from point of purchase OR alternatively you can transfer your tickets to the TG-curated ATP weekend event at the same venue which is confirmed for April 15 - 17th 2005, at which TG have agreed to give their last ever concert performance. All the other artists on the current RETG bill have been invited to play and in addition we anticipate the participation of a number of yet-to-be-confirmed 'high-profile' special guests whose previous schedules did not allow them to take part in this year's festival. TG have asked me to pass on their personal apologies to everyone for the obvious inconvenience these rearrangements will cause and to stress that this situation was NOT the band's doing. Mindful that many people will have already booked travel to the UK from afar,TG have decided to invite all CURRENT ticket holders to a PRIVATE RECORDING SESSION at a secret location in central London on the AFTERNOON of Sunday May 16th ( the same day they would have played at RE~TG ). This invitation is FREE & ONLY available to current ticket holders and is offered regardless of whether you also select a full refund of your ticket money or you choose to transfer your ticket to ATP 2005. RE~TG ticket holders will be notified directly and the details listed on the ATP and TG website in the next few days. This recording session event will not be open to the general public. The result of the recording will be a totally new TG work - & released as a TG DVD later in the year Exclusive TG related artifacts, some which were intended for sale @ RE~TG will be available exclusively for sale at the recording session. All those concerned in the realisation of RE~TG are very sorry to disappoint all those who were looking forward to RE~TG event, and are working hard to make up, in whatever practical way we can, to overcome this otherwise insurmountable problem. RE~TG has constantly suffered from scurrilous rumours of Throbbing Gristle playing at other events in various parts of the world. Please be aware that TG will not be playing at ANY other events whatsoever & ATP @ Camber Sands on 15-17 April 2005 is TG's only & final public performance
The Apostles suggests that Michael Eavis gives them the main stage on Sunday night... now that would be the way to finish up Glastonbury... but instead you'll get some whimsy shite |

More DJ Dangermouse
Here's a great piece in LA City Beat about one of the apostle's favourite artists.
We hope he's going to be massive... this apostle managed to find a vinyl copy of The Grey Album at a unamed record store in NYC and it's been on the decks ever since.
The LA city beat piece also tells us that he's being chased by record company execs even though they're the same people who don't want him to create his art the way he does.
They certainly are some fucked up individuals. |

Requiem For A Dreamer
Sad to report that another luminary of the counter culture, Hubert Selby Jr, has checked out aged 75. Apart from his monumental contribution to modern fiction (most famously with Last Exit to Brooklyn) he also leaves a sizeable body of recorded work including a multi-CD box set of Last Exit... (1998), Our Fathers Who Aren't in Heaven (1990) and Live in Europe 1989 (1995). Selby also worked with Nick Tosches on Blue Eyes and Exit Wounds - sample tracks from which can be heard here (Real Player needed). For those wanting a taste of his short story writing, Salon has an MP3 of The Pool Room from the collection Song of The Silent Snow.

Welsh Gold ?
Everybody seems to be going nuts about this lot in the UK at the moment. Goldie Lookin' Chain are this week's it band there.
Here in Sydney I haven't heard them yet .. but we gather you have to go back to the illest days of the Beastie Boys to get the flava as they say in hip hop circles.
Sounds to me as though they might have taken a cue from our favourite DJ Rubbish and mixed it with San Francisco's Gold Chains
website rumours mention a team up with the Darkness for a re-do of Walk This Way ...nuff said. |

Swedes Love An Aussie Girl
On my weekly trawl through the Rough Trade list I couldn't help but notice that indie swedish outfit Laakso have discovered the truth and released the Aussie Girl Ep
This should at least get them a few gigs here. |

Make Some Noise Returns To London Club Scene
Make Some Noise is back and featuring our very own friends the ROC SOUND SYSTEM
ROC say last time there were girls morris dancing to Throbbing Gristle and the Sweet.
Details of the night and who's appearing are as follows
MAKE SOME NOISE: THURSDAY 29th APRIL 2004. 8pm - 1am @ PUSH, 93 Dean St. Soho. . £4 on door / £2 guests.
CRACK VILLAGE (Live Session) ZAN LYONS (Live), DJS: LOADED KNIFE, ROC, TRIP THE SYSTEM
The infamous club night and label returns to London on a regular basis for an evening of live and electronic performance. The sonics will range from noisey cut-ups and laptop excursions, to leftfield hiphop and punky, electro breakbeat. Alongside the live artists, Make Some Noise DJs and guests will be spinning a variety of mash-up sounds, with a darkly humorous edge.
THE MENU CRACK VILLAGE (Live Session) Coming on like the Beastie Boys with the word power of a four headed Mark E Smith, the Crack Village boys and girls have been developing a solid live reputation, with recent support slots alongside Gold Chains, a mini UK tour and Australian shows on the horizon. Look out for the imminent single with Trip The System, "Who's Got The Crack", due out on Make Some Noise.
ZAN LYONS (Live) Melding cinematic and classical instrumentation with explosive laptop rhythms, Zan consistently surprises live in truly spellbinding performances. With a number of highly regarded releases under his belt, he will be pre-viewing material from his forthcoming album.
DJ SETS: LOADED KNIFE (Spiky Records) With current 7" on Spiky "The Bird" doing the business, Loaded Knife will be mixing up punk rock attitude with beats and warped pop sensibilities.
ROC (rocmusic / Spiky Records) A selection of unreleased CDR gems, unauthorised remixes, alongside YMO, Wendy Carlos and whatever takes their fancy.
TRIP THE SYSTEM (Make Some Noise) The Make Some Noise party DJ will be spinning label related tunes by the likes of Bomb 20, Gonzales, Patric C, Dr. Maya and never-before-heard exclusives that have found their way into the MSN P.O Box. |

Make Note - Gig
The Bumblebeez are playing the Hopetoun in Sydney this Thursday night - if you haven't seen them before do it now.
After this you'll see them supporting Radiohead and releasing stuff on Geffen so it'll probably be one of the last times you'll get to see them in such an intimate environment.
You'll want to say that you were there |

An Apostle In NYC
Quick diary update for Bondi apostle in New York today. Yesterday visited Rebel Rebel in Bleeker st in the west village. Great small record store where they'll actually talk to you about the music you'll like and recommend stuff you mightn't have heard before. It does mean you spend more $'s but you'll walk out happy.
Also great for opinions... asked him what he thought of the Scissor Sisters who i just don't get at all, and the response..... absolute respect for them simply for the fact that in his eys NYC's worst band can go to the UK and go top ten. Also turned me on to a new german label Pulver for which i think i'll be forever grateful.
Tonight it's leftfield club Rude Movements if i can make it after dinner. |

Lost In Translation / Lost In Music
That Sofia Coppola.. she knows how to hit you with a soundtrack. First up we had Virgin Suicides with some wonderful work from Air and now Lost In Translation with a truly wonderfully understated s.track that culminates in the Jesus & Marychain's Just Like Honey. My music collection only features 3 soundtracks, Morning of the Earth, Woodstock & Brother Where Art Thou this may well be my 4th. Yes... and for those who ask why don't I have the Trainspotting soundtrack the answer is simple. If you didn't already have all the decent tracks when the movie came out you obviously aren't a true music fan. |

Monica Gets Da Funk
The Cat Empire and the James Brown Experience @ Entertainmanet centre: First time I ever heard of the empire was about a year ago in a store in Melbourne. I asked the girl about the music playing, and she excitedly told me about the band, wrote their name on a piece of paper and made me promise I'd see them next time they went to Sydney. Which I did and very much enjoyed their show at the Annandale. Since then their debut album has been released, done great things and they're the support act for the legendary godfather of soul, James Brown.
For a man around the 70 mark Mr Brown still knows how to move. Nothing like a bit of "I feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel good" to get the smile happening. It didn't hit me til halfway through his second song: 'this is James Brown.' This is the man I've seen shaking ass in thirty year old concert clips. The man my father saw peform before I was even born. The man whose songs are recognisable to me, decades after they were recorded because they're constantly spun on dancefloors around the world. He's a consumate peformer, tons of fun and truly the godfather of all things soulful and funky.

Do Me Bad Things have been getting lots of press and have been described as Rocky Horror goes rock amongst other things.. our contact says that we should be thinking along the lines of The Tubes |

More Political Sampling Opportunities
There's a great project going on at the moment where the Miller Center of Public Affairs Presidential Recordings Program are compiling the secret tapes of past US presidents and their private conversations.
At the moment you can listen to: November, 1963 — JFK dictates a personal memior December, 1963 — Johnson with Jacqueline Kennedy August, 1964 — Johnson orders new custom–made trousers March, 1971 — Nixon with HR Haldeman March, 1971 — Nixon and Haldeman discuss Donald Rumsfeld June, 1971 — Nixon and Haldeman discuss John Kerry July, 1971 — Nixon, Kissinger and Haldeman discuss John Kerry July, 1971 — Nixon speaks with Donald Rumsfeld
Ok the sound quality is a bit iffy .. but the snippets would be great to slip into tracks... take a listen here |

Now The Year Is Really Looking Up
Have heard snippets of Beta Band's new single on the radio... don't even know what it's called but who cares.. the new album heroes to zeroes is out April 26th and as always will be years ahead of the rest of us.
Only a few weeks ago I'd been worrying to myself that they'd slipped into the ether... thank god they're back. |

Just How Good Are They ?
Except for New York's Rapture these Melbourne based boys and girl The Morning After Girls are the best band on the planet.
Saw them for the second time last night at the hopetoun in Sydney. Lazy reviews mention the Dandy Warhols but its deeper than that.. i could namecheck a thousand bands but imagine the Verve meet Rocky Erickson at the Byrds house in 1967.
They are so cool I can't tell you. Last night I could have watched them play the same set over and over until 5 this morning. Please somebody in the UK take on these guys, you'll soon forget about the Coral, Zutons et al. |
