We Love Audio Archives

Here at the 12 we love a good audio archive. I doubt this one will be of much interest to bootleggers etc as they won't have the foggiest who we are talking about.

US playwright Eugene O'Neill now has a number of his plays and a couple of interviews available if you have real player.

I for one shall be listening in.

U Freqs Go Overground

One of our favourite underground UK house labels U Freqs are moving ahead these days. They are presenting their BigHair act Live @ Fabric's Wiggle Saturday 5th of June featuring Lick:The Frog
in the wiggle room with terry francis nathan coles eddy richards.

This apostle likes U freqs because of their silliness, we hope that they don't get too english serious on us now they've made their way into the likes of uber cool fabric.

European Vacation .. I heard this really good record, it sounds a bit like

The 12 Apostles European Vacation night at the Hollywood went down well with the punters who jigged around to the Psychedelic Furs, Plastic Bertrand, Cameo and a host of other loved and unloved artists from the 70's, 80's & 90's.

Scott popped in from his regular gig at groovy thai restaurant Longrain later in the evening and introduced us to the delights of Gino Soccio. Perfect Italian 70's disco. Now just like any euro vacationer i'll be at my local vinyl emporium imploring them to supply me with this record I heard that sounds like....

End of Fashion & The Morning After Girls @ the Annandale

Monica Reports...

I can't be fair on the morning after girls. First they'd already pissed me off with their skinny ties and tight shirts and unoriginal rock hairstyles. Then they sang with that drony fuck you sort of singing. Then they didn't talk to us until about halfway through the set. So they put me in a bad mood and I wasn't about to enjoy their set whether it was good or not. My brother enjoyed it - so who knows.

As much as I didn't enjoy morning after girls was about as much as I did enjoy end of fashion. This has gotta be one of the most fun sets I've seen in a looooong time. Not only do these boys had a lovely set of songs, they were warm and having so much fun that it made me want to move to Perth so I can see them at the local every week. And their lead is just glorious. A wondrous, heartfelt (not in a soppy way) voice and a face that'd knock me down dead. Their EP came out recently, and I wouldn't put them quite ready to have an album, but damn I can't wait til they are. It should be a ripper.

Ed's note... The Morning After Girls must be a boys thing. Editor apostle reckons they are the best band in Australia at the moment

Bang Gang @ Moulin Rouge

Monica's out and about around town again... great to see

I've decided BG is an excellent "Last Club of the Night" place because until 3am the place is so packed and with so many of the TRYHARD ASSHOLES OF SYDNEY WHO RUIN GREAT PLACES it's hopeless. Then around 3ish they fuck off and it's cool and there's lots of room on the dancefloor to go a bit mad and its just the most magical place in Sydney.

And I think I know the secret to what makes Bang Gang so divine - Great DJs (spearheaded by DJ Buttfuck and Ajax) playing awesome party dance music (lots of cut up mash ups electro breaks 80s indie rock), wonderful venue (BTW a place my friend and I said would "make a great venue" before it ever was) now decorated with fake flowers and toys attached to the DJ booth, funny ads, and stuff like a Bang Gang CD and Zine. All this attracts (well by the end) some real crazy party harders who don't give a flying fuck about judging each other.

I do want to do a quick mention to something that struck me last night. DJ SLUTS are lame. What's a DJ slut? The guy who puts his hand up to the DJ, while he is DJing, to get a hi-five. The girl who tries to hand her bag/jacket to the DJ she (probably met once) to put behind the booth, again while he is DJing. I'd rather be going mad with the crowd thanks very much.

Thanks Monica

Summer Holiday In Winter

Just a quick reminder that the 12 apostles will be kicking off at the Hollywood Hotel this Saturday 22 May with the latest in their themed music nights.

This month it's European Vacation. We're paying homage to those hardworking dj's of the European summer disco and we'll feature some of the best and worst that the 80's & 90's could offer.

We note that we couldn't get many of our regular dj's to rise to this challenge so it'll be The Banker & Dj Fuckwit on the decks with help from a couple of mystery guests.

Join us and bring back the memories.

Next month is the final night in our current series Electro Kool Aid Acid Test

It's Winter So It Must Be Getting Colder

The guys at Modular have sent us a promo of Again by French producer Colder

Normally when promos drop on your doorstep you just know that you are in for 40 minutes of crap. But for once I'm pleasantly surprised.

This stuff reminds me of Maximillian Hecker's better moments. How would I describe it... Icy electronic soul is probably the closest I can come. Like any album there are a couple of fillers but in the main this it's a piece of work that'll probably generate a fair number of pale imitations.

I wouldn't go so far to say it's as good as the first offerings from Portishead or Air but it has a vibe about it that says..yeah cool, let's play it again.

Castrated Napster Re-Launched In UK

We'll leave it up to you to decide. But Napster was relaunched in the UK yesterday.

Remember those heady days when it was a name synonomous with rebellion and illegality like all good rock'n'roll. Now it's yet another lackey of the capitalist roaders !

Sex Pistol Becomes DJ

Fun article in the Washington Post about Steve Jones who's becoming a bit of a celebrity radio dj in LA.

Don't know why but I never get bored of sex pistols..and what they do or don't do these days. In a way it seems fitting that they end up on celebrity tv shows, talking rubbish on the radio and making money from their miniscule back catalogue. It always amuses me when part time punks accuse them of selling out,

Selling out of what exactly is my question. The pistols always seemed the ultimate in a band that enjoyed the moment rather than worrying about a career in music so it's great to see them doing what the hell pleases them almost 30 years later.

Trawling The Eighties

Soon the retro heads will be moving into the 90's for more plundering & inspiration. Today I noticed that Snap and CC & The Music Factory are soon to step onto our shores....help

Before we leave the eighties behind I note that the following bands have so far been ignored by the media, trendy New York bands and fashion designers.

I nominate the following to still be remembered

The Dancing Did

The Mob

The Dodgems

And finally The Triffids.. why they haven't been used as a template yet, I can't understand. They were the perfect underground band that spanned the eighties and even managed to survive the first couple of years of the nineties. Live, few bands could ever compare and their versions of sweet jane and into the groove were sublime.

People mourn the loss of Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix et al... I only mourn the loss of David McComb.

Video Cock

No we're not talking porn but Vauxhall's hippest night of the moment The CocK check the site and be part of London's now scene.

To be honest it all looks a bit like the now scene of last year...but at least they are making an effort by putting up video clips of the bands they have down there... I'm impressed by the guy who looks like a young Jah Wobble with beard. Who'd have thought the PiL bassist look would come back 25 years later.

Melbourne Strikes Again

What's in the water down there... I don't know, but everytime you think Sydney or Brisbane are catching up out comes one song that puts the other cities back in the shade.

Triple J have been pumping out the improbably named Your Wedding Night and their Shangrila's meets The Fall track, L-A-C-H-L-A-N.

It's a corker.. beg borrow or steal material, a perfect single.

Thai Full Moon Parties A Dangerous Occupation

We've commented on these parties before.. but they seem to be getting pretty out of hand these days.

Take a look at Koh Phangan Island News where we read stories of British tourists drowning, Germans being robbed and Thais getting into wild west gunfights on the beach during parties.

Fantastic journalism as well ...local thai man went home to get gun from daddy reads one report.
