Didn't Take Long For "Cock" Club To Go Mega Style

One of London's fave gay/electro/underground clubs has already moved into holding a Ministry type event..these July events(see lineups below) illustrate that underground types will be on the search for something new in the capital

Saturday 4th July, we re-create the vibe of the legendary HACIENDA club with two of it mainstays, GRAEME PARK and MIKE PICKERING, plus the DJ talents of some of its greatest musical offspring, MANI (Stone Roses) SHAUN RYDER (Happy Mondays) and the inimitable BEZ. Live on stage the UK debut of CARBON SILICON the new musical project from MICK JONES (Clash / B.A.D) & TONY JAMES (Gen X / Sigue Sigue Sputnik) and the glam talents of PINK GREASE. HACIENDA ROOM:MIKE PICKERING/ SHAUN RYDER/ GRAEME PARK/ MANI / BEZ
HIP HOP PARTY ROOM: STRETCH ARMSTRONG (NYC) / KRUST & DIE (old school set) / THE LOOSE CANNONS (DJ Set) / FRANCOIRS NORDMAN / DJ WINSTON

Sunday 5th July we are proud to present a tribute to the Legendary New York club SOUND FACTORY with an exclusive 6 hour DJ set from the one and only JUNIOR VASQUEZ (his first show in the UK for seven years) Plus Electro action Hosted by London's infamous COCK CLUB from MARK MOORE (S Express) Nag Nag Nag resident JO JO DE FREQ, PRINCESS JULIA & TASTY TIM. THE COCK ROOM: CHROMEO (Live) MARK MOORE JO JO FREQ TASTY TIM
PRINCESS JULIA DJ ROKK JOOST VAN BELLEN
SOUND FACTORY ROOM: JUNIOR VASQUEZ (6 Hour Set) ARTHUR BAKER

and so on and so forth

So who can tell us - where's the new underground on the London club scene.. Kashpoint is dead for all purposes, the Cock has gone mega... There's got to be the back room of a pub somewhere full of people under the age of 25 making noises that those over 25 don't understand.

I hope so anyway.

We have the same problem here in Sydney.. if they don't know the songs they don't like it.

One of the apostles favourite dj's, Canberra based Bec Paton was recently sacked after one night even though the young hip gay punters loved her approach and kept asking for more.. but not the owner... no lyrics sweetie he said and off into the darkness she wandered.

And the music industry is surprised that people won't spend their hard earned cash on CD's.

Hendrix Estate Slight Return

Assoc press have written the following report - we reckon it's all a bit sad.... The brother of Jimmi Hendrix is contesting his father's will which apparently after the influence of his sister in law left him with nothing.

The lifestyles of the beneficiaries are being criticised by those who were less fortunate.

Leon Hendrix, 56, is suing to have Janie ousted as the company's boss and to have his father's will revised to include him. Al Hendrix died in 2002 at age 82.

Janie Hendrix rolled her eyes and shot dismissive glances as lawyers for Leon Hendrix and other family members recited a litany of allegedly excessive spending.

Her lawyer, John Wilson, told the judge that some of the money has been repaid, and a special audit will determine how much more should be repaid.

But Wilson stressed that what is at issue is Al Hendrix's will, and that he did not want Leon Hendrix or his children to have any involvement with the company or receive any money from it.

A 1996 version of Al Hendrix's will would have directed 24 per cent of the estate to Leon Hendrix, 38 per cent to his stepsister and the balance to other beneficiaries. But it was rewritten in 1997 to exclude Leon.

Wilson insisted that Al Hendrix decided on his own to write Leon Hendrix out of the will, but Leon's lawyer said the father was infirm in his old age and could not comprehend even simple legal issues.

Week For Wild Oldies

Those radical oldies are up to no good again... first of all his Bobness turns up late for his honorary degree at St Andrews and then we gather he leaves all the important paperwork behind. The 12 love the pictures of endless fawning by old biddy academics who think it's cool to have some dodgy old folkie on board.

Actually we're being a bit cruel to Bob here.... he's still pretty cool even if his music is less than passable these days.... I doubt he'd get a third or even a pass for some of the songs we've heard from him in the last five years.

Even better though is that wild kid Tony Blackburn who decided that even if the radio station he worked for Classical Gold Digital didn't like his Cliffness...so what... and out came Living Doll and We Don't Talk Anymore. pretty apt choice on the second number as the station promptly stood him down for 48 hours for breaking their playlist policy.

What next ... Sir Paul arrested for GHB use..?

Experimental Sounds Down The Boozer

Sound no Sound returns to the Bat & Ball in Surry Hills on Sunday 4th July.

Next weekend's showcase features City City City ; Rand & Holland and Disaster Plan. Here‚s the skinny on them all ...

City City City - Charismatic Melbourne post-rockers, launching their brand new album "Dawn and The Blue Light District" specially at sound no sound! Their warm instrumentals and freak-jazz noisescapes have seen them compared to the likes of Do Make Say Think, Tortoise and Miles Davis. Be prepared to be blown away by this seven-piece sublime sound collision.

Rand & Holland - Revered Sydney ensemble whose "Tomorrow Will Be Like Today" record received rave reviews on its release last year. Led by long-standing member of the experimental scene Brett Thompson, Rand & Holland‚s music is as much about the spaces between the sounds as the sounds themselves.

Disaster Plan - Nearly-unclassifiable Victorian outfit, taking in eclectic elements of rock, country skewed strangeness! Their album "Reality Correctors One Through Twelve" features a radical reinterpretation of New Order‚s "Age Of Consent". Disaster Plan's line-up has recently been buoyed by the addition of Laura MacFarlane (Ninety-Nine) on vibes, backing vocals and violin.

To celebreate the launch of City City City's new album the first 5 people through the door will receive a free copy of "Dawn and The Blue Light District".

The inaugural sound no sound on Sunday 9th May was a resounding success, with innovative performances from Husbands ; The Garbage & The Flowers and Castings. Make sure you don‚t miss this next one!

Entry is $10.

London Councils Aim To Get Corporate Heads For Flyposting

No longer will the paste gopher be the target of council and police ire in London... they've decided to go after the execs to see if they can bring the issue under control.

Take a look at Streetbling to learn more.

The apostles are in a bit of a dilemma here as we're not averse to a bit of flyposting ourselves. I'm torn between the pleasure of seeing UK's MTV head honcho being prosecuted and the fact that a city without flyposting is ends up a drab, dull desert of a place

The Sax is Back

It all started after returning home from Sonic Youth last Friday and flicking on Rage.

Jumping out of the screen is what looks like some lost new wave band from the late 70's.. the video looks like an early damned or the New York Dolls without quite so much make up.

Next day my Rough Trade list comes through and I'm told this is the new rock'n'roll

This week I pop into one of my favourite record stores and the first thing I'm asked is, have you heard.......

Who am talking about... sheffield'sone and only Pink Grease and that song is now firmly imprinted in my head.... the Pink G-R-E-ASE is gonna make you rawk..

Forget the Darkness, Jet blah blah blah. With their re-invention of the New York Dolls and electroish/synth glam sound these guys get my vote

When they get here, Australia is just gonna love this shit.

Anti Music Corporates Website - Gets Active At Gigs In US

You got to give it to these guys for taking the battle to the great satans of the music industry.

Downhill Battle.org have selected specific US tours and gigs that need to be targeted and audiences given fliers and actively informed about copyright issues.

If you are a musician who happens to agree with them get in touch and do your bit to say fuck you to record contracts, their control over your copyright etc. This means of course that you'll have to postpone the day you install this in your backyard.

New York Flavour Continues In Southern Hemisphere

Bondi apostle was to be found last night at the enmore theatre checking New York's Underground darlings, Sonic Youth for the first time in nigh on 20 years.

Last time there were only a dozen of us on a windswept Brighton Beach, now a few years into the new century they are the bible of sources for bands that have been, are now and will be; and the crowd love them to death for it.

With new addition Jim O'Rourke we were treated to the controlled sonic mayhem that is the youth... to be honest I have no idea what they played, all I can tell you that normally two thirds of the way through most gigs I find myself sneaking a quick yawn. Not so with these guys, I'll admit my mouth was wide open half the time but this was due in the main to sudden guitar avalanches and the excitement of having a really hot woman to watch on stage. Give me Kim over Beyonce & J.Lo anyday.

Also great to see Triple J going Sonic Youth mad this week with Thurston being invited to play a couple of tracks right in the middle of the daytime schedule.. hearing Cabaret Voltaire's Nag Nag Nag just before the midmorning news was very refreshing radio.

The New York Dolls Live

One of our London apostles writes after seeing them on the Morrissey curated Meltdown at the South Bank:

Another one for you punk zombies: iIsaw the new york dolls (3 of them) last night at the festival hall.

Magic, no licence required. if they come to your country i suggest you go. Far from creaky, guitarist sylvain and bassist arthur kane sound like they've been rehearsing weekly since 1975 and sound like clash, pistols and ramones all at once. I suppose they invented the core sound for all those groups...?

Helped by Libertines drummer (whatever you think of them, he is in charge) and some guitar dude called Steve Conti.

David Johansen is surely the most entertaining front man in the history of rock. i suppose he's Mick Jagger but he beats him for charm.

Played the signature songs (personality crisis, trash etc) but also a shangri las tune and gene pitney's 'mecca'.

The Oils To Clean Up Australian Environmental Politics

Shouty lead singer of Aussie stalwart band Midnight Oil Peter Garrett is to be preselected in a safe Sydney labor ( yes here in Aus we've decided to drop the U in Labour) seat.

The apostles say good luck to him and we hope that you won't be giving any dancing lessons to your new political colleagues.

Does this mean that Tony Blair will be finding a safe seat for Billy Bragg to contest later in the year.

We think rockin' John Kerry should recruit Missy Elliott to pass the Dutch around a bit and give him some rapping tips .. to loosen up his speech patterns.

Don't Know Why But I Am

I am what ?

For one reason or another and I'm not quite sure myself I'm listening to the Psychedelic Furs again. A quick fan site check tell me they are still touring the US on a regular basis. I suppose that's what a Hollywood hit will do for. Talking of hits, if you feel like a trip down memory lane why not check out their videos.

Suppose I'll be telling you about Teardrop Explodes next week.

Hit The Road Jack

Y'all know by now that Ray Charles died yesterday. Except his website which doesn't mention it all. Can't say I've been a big fan but his version of Rainy Night In Georgia was pretty cool and he alwys looked the coolest guy on the block in thiose 60's film clips with all those funky tweeter go go girls.

Australia's Top Dj's

According to overhyped dance website, In the Mix and their readership the top 50 are ....

Now you've had a chance to link through and check the list you'll see that it's dominated by breaks, hard dance type dj's or the same old mafia. Unsurprisingly there aren't any of the apostles fave dj's on the list.

This is the people's choice and as with any element of democracy the mediocre always seem to win out.

Whilst we're on the subject of dj's this apostle has just listened to DJ Ajax's mix cd given away free with the Bang Gang fagzine ( read fanzine). This boy certainly has attention deficiency disorder. It was almost like listening to a cooler version of Jive Bunny at times. And as for the inclusion of Freez's 80's nightmare AEIOU I'm just a little worried. That said the cd mix is fun and I gather they are all nice boys so I won't be too hard on them.

Withering On The Vine(s)

So.. the big gossip in Sydney town this week is the acerbic appearance of the Vines at the Annandale for listeners of crap radio station Triple M. Their idea of cutting edge in 2004 would be Silverchair or Pearl Jam, but that's by the by.
The show was very shortlived with Craig having a go at photographers, some chick in the crowd and the bassist walking off by the 2nd or 3rd song. All in all it sounds a great rock'n'roll show... a bit of chaos and anger sounds fine to me.
But Triple M weren't happy and they say they'll never play the Vines again .... the apostles says, well done Craig, at last somebody is injecting a little bit of confusion into the game and very slightly upsetting the industry machine.
Can't we have more of this sort of thing.. wouldn't it just be great if there was just an n'th of rebellion in the tired old man that is rock music.

Record Shop Gossip

Can't help but repeat that Bondi Apostle's local record emporium Parade Records played host to mega star Andre 3000 on Sunday. We gather he picked up some Jazz, funk and a Bob Marley box set.

We're told that in real life he's very good looking and has beautiful eyes...

Skrufff.com

Skrufff is one of this apostles favourite weekly music / dance related online newsletters and I've been reading every Saturday for the past year or so now.

Why?

Simple really .. it's the only place where people bother to put together this sort of article.

"Now I shall speak quite openly on the question of whether German radio should broadcast so-called jazz music. If by jazz we mean music that is based on rhythm and entirely ignores or even shows contempt for melody, music in which rhythm is indicated primarily by the ugly sounds of whining instruments so insulting to the soul, why then we can only reply to the question entirely in the negative."

Hitler's propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, announcing the Nazi's RAVE Act style ban on jazz in the 1930s (for being 'degenerate, sub-human' music.)

Nazi/ RAVE Act Music Ban Links:

Nazi Jazz regulations 'Prohibition: It is forbidden to play in public music which possesses to a marked degree characteristic features of the method of improvisation, execution, composition and arrangement adopted by Negroes and coloured people . . . .')

''The Nazi authorities fought particularly fierce battles against jazz ˜for them, the paradigm instance of 'degenerate music'. They were able here, as in all areas of social life, to trade on an extreme reactionary conservatism whose roots went back well before 1933. . .')

Thanks Skrufff... subscribe to the newsletter at the top link. We also like the idea that one of their better known subscribers is Yoko Ono.
