Backstage Riders

Haven't heard from Smoking Gun for a while.. probably because they've been so busy creating their exhaustive Backstage Riders database.

Useful information such as Jerry Springer needs Pina Colada infused smoke machines... I kid you not! and 50 cent is obviously a Hindu / Muslim hybrid as no beef or pork is allowed anywhere near the backstage area.... he also has a liking for soy milk.

sad sad people.....

Hurrah For The Bootlegging Judge

The recording industry in the US is pissed off. The BBC reports that a US judge has struck down a bootleg law which bans the sale of bootleg recordings of live music in the United States.

The BBC writes Judge Harold Baer Jr, sitting in New York, dismissed charges against a Manhattan-based record dealer which had been brought under the law. He said the law could not stand because it placed no time limit on the ban - unlike the limits placed on books or recorded music releases.

Prosecutors said they were "reviewing the decision" the judge made.

A federal grand jury indicted Jean Martignon in October 2003 for selling "unauthorised recordings of live performances by certain music artists through his business".

But Judge Baer said US law unfairly granted "seemingly perpetual protection" to the original performances.

US law defines bootlegs as being recordings of the original performances, as opposed to copies of already released music, such as live albums, which are dealt with under piracy legislation.

The Recording Industry Association of America criticised the judge's ruling.

"It stands in marked contrast to existing law and prior decisions that have determined that Congress was well within its constitutional authority to adopt legislation that prevented trafficking in copies of unauthorised performances of live music," spokesman Jonathan Lamy said.

Old Hippy Now Lover of God Is Terror Suspect

The Bush regime's terror madness appears to be going from the sublime to the ridiculous... the apostles learn that Cat Stevens was on Flight 919 to Washington from London yesterday when it was discovered that he was on a US government watch list including the 'no-fly' list.

When it was discovered that Stevens was daring to fly into the US the plane was diverted to Maine so that it was not in the US air high traffic areas. Passengers were delayed up to six hours because of the delay. and the Cat now known as yusuf was refused entry into the USA "for reasons of national security'.

What the apostles don't get is why the US authorities hadn't taken this sort of action in the 70's and saved themselves the trouble now. Other benefits would have included more space for other records in 2nd hand shops and more importantly I'd have been able to spend a lot more time indulging in nookie with my girlfriend when I was 15 rather than having to politely listen to her best friend's Cat Stevens records.

Viral Marketing

Home to the liars and others is label Sound Virus.

We're impressed by the nous of one of the label's roster The Cinema Eye who have emailed us about the forthcoming release of their album on the label. Check a sample of their work here

Mollie Wells singer and bassist, I think, says.... This song is the first track off the Cinema Eye's upcoming full-length "Some Nerve". We are currently signed to Sound Virus Records and have toured with bands such as An Albatross, Radio Berlin, the Red Light Sting and Pretty Girls Make Graves.

Good on you Mollie.. the apostles loves da nasty punk sound ... and we're talking about real punkishness not that ghastly offspring type garbage.

Having checked the label's site I was a bit disapointed to learn that the The Sick Lipstick have split.I have no idea what they sound like but what a cool name....

3 Down One To Go

Sad day yesterday Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of The Ramones, died. He was 55.

Johnny died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, his publicist said. He had battled prostate cancer for five years and was hospitalized in June at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The band's singer, Joey Ramone, whose real name was Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Bassist Dee Dee Ramone, who was born Douglas Colvin, died of drug overdose in 2002.

Johnny founded The Ramones in 1974 with Joey Ramone, DeeDee Ramone and Tommy Ramone, the only surviving member of the original band.

A tribute concert and cancer research fund-raiser was held Sunday in Los Angeles to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary. It featured performances by Los Angeles punk band X, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Henry Rollins and others.

Dance Culture = Soft Porn

I'm sure the manumission club in Ibiza is a lot of fun.. having never been anywhere near the place i can't really judge .. but having checked their website recently i'd venture my opinion that all it is, is an excuse for a bit of titillating soft porn and oversized breasts stuffed into very small bras. Now, according to the website Jade Jagger's boyfriend's band is playing there regularly... what more need you say.

I'm With The Band

Congolese superstar Papa Wemba has taken this old adage to heart... check out this story detailing his arrest in France after over 150 people who'd supposedly come to the country as members of his band were actually identified as illegal immigrants.

Dodgy Techno ... Good Intentions

Here we go again... boof boof...doof doof, at least these guys have some humour.

Australian Trash4Cash have put together a couple of downloads sampling the easiest of targets, the good President himself in their track America.

Better though is the public dummy spit by Aus Channel 7's olympic commentator Ray Hadley who got somewhat upset with the production team back at HQ.. all non aussies should give this a listen to see how seriously we take our sport.

We also look forward to their next track. "Confessions Overboard (The October 9 mix) - DJ Johnny Vs Marky Mark" inspired by our upcoming election.

    Acid House Meets New Order

Those guys at Rephlex certainly do their research... their latest blast from the past is a 12" that features Acid Re-workings of New Order's Blue Monday & Confusion

Don't know if they'll change the world now almost 20 years later but they must have sounded pretty wild at the time.
