Archived Peel Shows

Send in your tapes to this guy .. he is providing archived peel shows online... You can be assured there's probably less nostalgia is a Peel show of 5 years ago than a current xfm or radio 1 show

Take a look here

He writes For those who miss the voice of sanity mingled with the music of nosebleeds, this site provides an archive of past programmes for listeners across the world to download and enjoy. Anyone who wants to share a tape with us, please make an MP3 or Real Audio file out of it, and send it via You Share It, You Send It, or Rapid Share, with jon.horne@ukonline.co.uk as "Recipient's Email Address".

Radical Speakers

Just outside Brooklyn's Bourough Station subway exit stands a man with the greatest collection of illegally burnt CD's of radical black speakers we've ever seen. His little stall is a treasure trove of cheap sampling opportunities. How about Stokey Carmichael, or Malcolm X's last speech or even Arundithi Roy on Iraq.

The only white face peering from those CD covers... Gore Vidal

Best CD shop on wheels I've ever seen

Congratulations Are Due

The Apostles are very happy to see that up and coming electro dj originally from Canberra and now based in Sydney Bec Paton is getting a full page feature in this week's Australian Magazine.

Don't bother going to the site you won't find anything there.

Bec played at a couple of the Apostles infamous nights at Sydney's Hollywood Hotel last year and we knew when we asked her to play and then heard her music that she'd be a star.

We'd just like to get a little righteous here for a moment and remind those naysayers amongst you that last year the Apostles featured regularly, Dsico / Bec Paton / Ollo at our nights. By the end of 2005 you'll see that all three are at the vanguard of the new Sydney underground.

Cool Tool

I love people with time to do this sort of thing.. here the Bootleg Browser which basically helps you search bootlegs ( as in illegal recordings rather than mashups) by band, and download.

What a great world we live in

This one is firmly locked into my favourites bar

Mixadelica

The whole of Primal Scream's Screamadelica has been remixed in 04/05 scatterdelica style... the old raver that i am in general i have to say i'm still more a fan of the original versions but that said I am particularly partial to the re-interpretation of Loaded.

Still worthwhile making sure that this is a playlist on your ipod.

Do The Math

On my last visit to RT in Portobello they gave me a freebie copy of the best of 2004 according to RT.

CD 1 is very nice a full of those singer songwriters that everybody is so enamoured by these days ( just like 1965 never went away) but it's CD 2 that gets me interested .. The first two tracks, Shackleton's Stalker and Brooks' Do the Math do the business for me and make me wonder why anybody bothers with nostalgia music at all eg all those "angular" bands that they are banging on about.

Yes FF's album last year was great fun... but the Futureheads ( who cares) Maximo Park ( to close to FF), Kaiser Chiefs ( 0ne good track on the album) and so on and so forth.

I don't care what everybody says ... I like Grime...

Yahoo To Develop Music Search Engine?

Search Engine Watch have reported that Yahoo is developing music search engine

The report says

The specialty engine will let people search on an artist's name, for example, and retrieve all the available songs from other music services, as well as album reviews and band information from Yahoo Music.

Yahoo's Jeff Karnes would not confirm the News.com report at this time. However, the article says that the service should be available in the next few months.

From the way the article reads, the new service sounds like (no pun intended) some type of federated search tool that will simultaneously query music availability from a couple online music services and their own MusicMatch service and merge results into one results list.

The News.com article mentions that along with song availability the service will also retrieve info about the artist, album, etc. from their Yahoo Music database. Here's what a bio of The Rolling Stones presently looks like via Yahoo Music.

I've said for a long time that federated search technology will be one of the "next" big things.

Yahoo purchased MusicMatch last September for $160 million. In February, Yahoo rebranded all of their music properties as Yahoo Music.

Missed Opportunity

Mrs Apostle & I have just spent the weekend in the Hamptons and unsuprisingly I just had to pop into local record store Long Island Sounds.

Right there at the front door was an inviting crate of records and i just couldn't resist flicking through.

Within seconds i knew i had discovered that long lost mid eighties Fire Island dj set. Up popped the Flirts covering the Beach Boys Surfs Up, then a 12" remix of Herbie Hancock's Rockit followed by gem after gem of hi-energy disco sounds for that perfect summer party.

Suddenly i was brought back from my reverie by the store owner telling me that he headn't bought the records yet and they were NFS... I'll still be thinking about that crate in 20 years time.

All was not lost though i did manage to find a 99cent copy of Harry Belafonte covering Calypso Songs and the Who Are You lp for $3.99.

Vitalic Album

French producer Vitalic has released his first album. the first I heard of him was last year when Peel was singing the praises of his track Fanfares... This is the first time in ages that dance music has sounded fresh again.. the album's called OK Cowboy and it deserves to be massive

The President Listens To His ipod

No illegal downloading by the president - instead his chief aid goes to i-tunes and buys tracks for the pres to listen to. Unsurprisingly he likes country singer George Jones... more suprisingly he's a fan of My Sharona by the Knack.

CNN has the story
